Not a New Series, But New to Me (2008-04-21)
As a longtime reader of murder mysteries, I’m always on the lookout for a new author (or at least new to me). I’ve enjoyed the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell, and while waiting for my new Kindle to arrive, ran across reviews for the Temperance Brennan by Kathy Reichs. I decided to start with the beginning of the series, and found a copy at my local library. It was a very good read. I found myself picking up the book every chance I got to find out what happened next.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. I think ‘Death du Jour’ (second in the series), may be my first purchase for my Kindle when it arrives tomorrow. I can’t wait to see what case Temperance tackles next.Deja Dead (2008-04-07)
Though the book started out slow, it got much better with lots of effective, engaging twists and turns.bones galore (2008-03-03)
this first introduction to temperance brennan is a promise of things to come. fresh and excitingsuspense and thriller (2008-02-27)
This book i enjoyed reading very much. I wanted to read more after seeing the TV series Bones, but be warned; this is a very different story in it’s setting and the main characters are different too. Of course Tempe is unchanged, but the TV is really totally different. However it is a good read for every one who likes detective-thrillers like the books by Patricia Cornwall.Excellent Read…. (2008-01-14)
As usual, I never read a series in order, and I’m kicking myself for it. I’ve read a few of Dr. Reichs’ other Tempe Brennan books, but I just read the debut, Deja Dead.
I found this book very engaging and enjoyable. It was well written and really not as formulaic as some; there are some definite twists in the plot. Dr. Brennan is a realistic character and even though she is a forensic anthropologist and deals with human remains on a regular basis, she shows compassion for the victims.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series because the other Tempe Brennan books I’ve read have been very good, also.
Note–The Tempe Brennan character in these books is nothing like the Tempe Brennan character in Bones, so if you like the show and expect the same characters, etc., you will be surprised.

It will light a fire under you and change your perspective on a lot of things….just go ahead and read it….you will be better for it…Why You’re DUMB SICK & BROKE (2008-04-06)
The book came on time and is quite interesting. It is a common sense approach to life!Fantastic Read (2008-03-08)
I wasn’t sure where this book was going when I read the first chapter, but I stuck with it and am happy that I did. Fantastic read! The author challenges the reader to really think about basic principles that have been jammed down our throats. As with anything, not all of it is actionable material, but food for thought.Oh well…..? (2008-02-24)
Having now met the author i can better review the book. Although there is a good message throughout, some encouragement and a good personal outcome for Randy, don’t expect any focus on anyone else.
I have shared it with others and received similar feedback.
Ok we gwet it Randy, you’re rich now, own lots of cars, a fancy house etc etc.
There are many other sources with a less arrogant outlook available.

Flip flopper (2008-02-11)
The book was great, and I totally agreed about everyhing in Chapter 2 in regards to how religion stifles the mind. This is a very motivational book and very inspirational except the author begins to flip flop chapter 7 where he injects GOD into his motivation. God is religion. In his “Law 6: The Law of Tithing” the author sounds like the televagenlist who brain wash viewers into beleiving if they donate whatever than can in monetary form they in turn will have a bigger
favor returned by the almighty Santa Claus in the sky. Randy Gage writes in chapter 2, ” In fact, he (Pope John PAUL II) scorned the effects of capitalism at every opportunity-except when the collection basket made the rounds.” He writes in Chapter 1. ” Your religion probably doesn’t want you to be successful either.” In chapter 6 he write, ” When you tithe by choice, you invoke many of the other laws, creating ripples of reciprocity that eventually find their way back to you.” Tithes are usually made to churches and othe religious organizations which means Gage is telling us to give money to the very organizations which do not want us to become successful. The other problem with this book is he tries to motivate the read into thinking rich. This is a fine concept for us in the USA and industrialized and rich nations. How does this motivate a starving and poor person in Darfur or somewhere in Latin America who does not have the resources which we take for granted each day. Are the poor in those situations by there by choice or are they there becuase of surrounding circumstances such as super rich men in power who drive red Vipers? How do you think rich when the barrel of a gun is pointed at you everyday in a country such as Iraq? The author was blessed to have been born in the USA where we have opportunities to think and be rich and be a flip flopper and fantasy writer.

The Bee-siest Field Trip of All Time (2004-10-26)
“The Magic School Bus: Inside a Beehive” represents a slight departure for author, Joanna Cole, and illustrator, Bruce Degen. Written in 1996, this book could easily have been all about our friends, the insects. Because, as student Dorothy Ann explains in the opening pages, “There are more insect species on earth than all other animals put together!” Indeed, you need look no farther than your own backyard (or a few dusty corners of your home) to find bugs of all shapes and sizes crawling around, buzzing about, and foraging for food.
However, Cole and Degen chose to shine their respective spotlight on one insect in particular. Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. According to Florrie, another student of Ms. Frizzle, “There are more than 20,000 different kinds of bees.” And the word “bee” itself conjures up all sorts of emotions in people. Some are deathly afraid of them; others have been stung and know the pain a sting induces; and then there are those who are allergic to these insects.
But is that all there is to the bee? Is it really the little stinging monster we think it is? Or is there something more to this delicate creature than we know? And this, readers, is where Cole, Degen, a band of students, and some teacher nicknamed the Friz, enter the picture. For they are going to set the record straight, once and for all, about what the nature of bees really entails.
Our latest adventure starts out with Ms. Frizzle and her students studying insects, such as ants and cockroaches and goliath beetles. She has also arranged a field trip to a local honeybee hive.
“The beekeeper is visiting his hives today,” says the Friz. “We’ll meet him there.” And with that she sweeps out the door.
“Maybe this will be a normal field trip for a change,” one student expresses to another.
With Ms. Frizzle, only the most adventurous teacher in the entire known universe, at the helm? Don’t bet on it! However, as it turns out, she does have a normal field trip in store this time. She even brings along a picnic basket while she and the students wait for the beekeeper to arrive.
Then it happens. The moment at which this otherwise regular field trip takes a sharp turn into irregular. While attempting to open a jar of honey — “Some light refreshments will pass the time while we wait,” says the Friz — she accidentally knocks her elbow against a strange lever. The bus shrinks faster than a student can say, “Great galloping gargoyles!” And, to no one’s surprise, students and teacher are magically transformed into bees.
Readers and students alike learn all sorts of bee-utiful facts about these insects in Cole and Degen’s latest entry into science for children. Did you know the average bee visits thousands of flowers every day? Or that, sometimes, an entire hive may “adopt” a lost bee if it is carrying a lot of food? How, exactly, does a bee, while gathering nectar for the hive, manage to pollinate all those flowers at the same time? What tasks are different bees assigned once inside the hive? Do they really communicate with one another by performing a bee dance? Readers will be amazed when they discover how many eggs the queen bee lays each day, and they’ll be even more surprised when they see what happens when two queen bees are born at the same time inside the hive.
By focusing on just one insect in particular, Cole and Degen manage to “humanize” the bee. Meaning, through their research and attention to detail, they have made the bee less scary than it actually is. Do bees go around looking for people to sting? Of course not. As explained in the story, a sting is not particular conducive to the bee giving it or the person on the receiving end of it.
Besides the excellent writing and fabulous artwork (a staple of any collaboration between Cole and Degen), there are two other aspects of this story that work well for it. Borrowing a page out of Jan Brett’s playbook (”The Hat” and “The Mitten”), Cole uses the “story within a story” technique to great effect here. While Ms. Frizzle and her students are buzzing around, we see snippets of why the beekeeper is late, as well as hints of danger to come for teacher, students and the bees! Anyone who’s read the “Jesse Bear” series (also wonderfully illustrated by Degen) will instantly recognize the bear invading this story.
Not wanting to break with tradition, Cole and Degen explain, at the end of their latest offering, what was fact in the story and what was made up. They also provide a subtle — or not so subtle — hint of what lays in store for the Friz and her students for their next field trip. It will be a shock, no doubt; one readers will definitely get a charge out of!
As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, “Bee of good cheer, class. We’re on our way!”More Science! (2001-07-29)
My son is 4 years old and we read to him a lot. Now, before bed, he announces, "Mom, you know what kind of book to read….ONLY SCIENCE!" He loves science, and the Magic School Bus is a great, fun way to introduce it, even to a preschooler!Beekeeper’s Review (1999-12-12)
Kids (of all ages) ask the darndest things. When we work fairs or are identified as beekeepers in public, we are bomberded with basic questions regarding honeybees. This book was bought for my mother as much as for my brother’s son. He asks her questions difficult to answer without pictures, "How do bees make wax…?" This book goes into enough detail to answer all the "How do…?’s" likely to come up regarding honeybees. A fine book for any child interested in insects. Also a good selection to temper the fears of those children that may fear bees. The pages are a little busy, otherwise would have gotten 5 stars.Once again, Magic School Bus hits the mark! (1998-04-19)
The full details in this book are simple enough to keep children’s interests (mine are ages 4 and
but still provide more data than even I knew. The subject matter is of particular interest to kids, not only because bees are encountered nearly every day, but this book helps this overcome the fear that some children have of bees by showing them as peaceful, otherwise occupied and busy creatures. Don’t miss this, or any other Magic School Bus book if you have kids!

read it for a great overview (2007-12-04)
This is a one stop comprehensive resource to learn the current legal system in China. China is changing rapidly. Their legal infrastructure is just being assembled. It also gives a lot of historical background, which is indispensiable to understanding the legal system. How can a country that does not recognize personal property rights have intellectual property law? I recommend reading the book then going over to mainland China to check things out. Also law schools offer great summer courses in China now which add real life experience to your readings.Good introduction to Chinese law (2007-08-15)
According to the objects of the In a Nutshell” Series the book provides a compact and concise overview of its subject and therefore serves well as a first gate into the wide premises of Chinese law, but naturally cannot replace books on specific areas of Chinese law. The topics taken into account are thoroughly chosen after practical relevance for the western legalese working for a company with business contacts to (Mainland) China. Important for the understanding of the following are the underlying first chapters which exhibit a solid presentation of the historic and cultural background. Knowledge and competence of the author are beyond all question. He worked as an in-house counsel for a multi-national enterprise in China and has command of Chinese language. Only four points, however, for it represents the state as of 2002and possibly needs to be revised or amended in part.Very good (2006-03-09)
The book is very good to understand the evolution of the legal system of the PRC; it is a well-written historical explanation and is also quite objective.
Helped me a lot on my graduation thesis.

The third side of the Russian coin. (2008-04-12)
Having lived in Russia six years and still in business there since 1991, I quickly learned that in Russia there is not only the proverbial two sides of the coin, but often three. Figes cetainly examines that underside of what makes a Russian different. He does it with revealing research and obvious affection and respect for those deep characteristics so unique to Russia and it’s people. Certainly a scholarly work, but still entertaining, convincing, and a joy to read. As I have heard from Russian readers of my own book, “Why does it always take a foreigner to explain us.” Figes is a master at that.
Frederick R. Andresen, Author of “Walking on Ice, An American Businessman in Russia”Natasha’s Dance (2008-02-23)
I’m still in the middle of this thick book, and I find it fascinating–but my Russian colleagues tell me is it not altogether trustworthy in its portrayal of Russian history and culture, so I’m looking at it with an eye toward possible problems. That said, it is an eminently readable, fun way to get through a lot of the history of this endlessly fascinating country.Like Taking An Excellent College Overview Course (2007-12-18)
Sure this book didn’t include everything that could be said about the cultural history of Russia, but what it said and how it said it was superb. You really get an appreciation for the great themes of intellectual thought. It reminded me of what it was like to take college history classes taught by the best professors on campus, back in the day.a Slice of History (2007-11-06)
Bought Natasha’s Dance upon recommendation of a friend. Have only just started reading, but I am captivated by the passion and detail of Figes writing and quite looking forward to delving more deeply into this history of the Russian people.Great reading of Russky history (2007-01-25)

Healthy oils are essential (2007-12-01)
Some of the ideas in this book are great; others are terrible. The important work that has been done since the 1980s concerning the essential, healing role that omega-3 fatty acids play in the human diet is not reflected in this book. Be very, very cautious if you use this book. Be sure to read widely to make up for the major deficits of scientific, nutritional knowledge that plague this author.Informative and Well-Written (2007-03-31)
Once again, Mischio Kushi has written an informative and precise book on how to maintain your health, even when facing a diagnosis of cancer.
Like so much of the macrobiotic diet, this is a healthy and great diet to begin to feel great and regain your health.Informative (2007-03-18)
This book is informative, but since cancer patients have to see a nutritiionist and eat whatever their body allows them to eat, this can be difficult. But, if the the patient can eat whatever they need to, this book has lots of good advice and suggestions. The most thorough treatise on the subject (2002-11-15)
This book does an excellent job of summarizing and organizing all of the work done by Michio Kushi and others over the span of decades working with cancer patients. Though Macrobiotics is based on much Japanese culture, this book is geared to the westernized/American reader so there is very little in the way of cultural chasm to jump over.
Many of the reviews up here are rather ill-informed. Though Macro has been around for decades, most of modern medicine now accepts its precepts, including the AMA, WHO, National Institute of Cancer Research and others. Most of the major natural lifestyle books that have been published in the last 30 years acknowledge learning much from Michio–some are direct carbon copies of Michio’s works!
In any case, I have used it and seen first hand my family members recover directly from changing the diet and lifestyle. The changes to body and health happen within a few weeks. My family and I looked and felt better within 6-8 weeks, and the member that had been diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live, had the cancer go into remission and lived a number of years longer–and did not die from cancer. I make no claim it will work in every case, but it is a tremendous aid in re-establishing ones good health. If I were to come down with cancer or other serious illness I would go strict Macro. It not only effects your chronic health, but your more general weight and energy levels as well. It is a bit hard to stay on for the long haul with our modern lifestyles, but you do the best you can–and you do it seriously if you are sick.
There has NEVER been any serious and backed up accusation that anything on the diet is in any way dangerous to your health, so there is zero downside to trying it.
As to the sad passing of members of Michio’s family from cancer, what can one say. There appears to be a weakness in their genetic make-up that allows this. Nobody knows if they would have died at a much earlier age, and for all we know Michio was attracted to the study of health and cancer due to this family predilection. This is a common reason people get into the study of health.
I am forever grateful for the work this man has done and shared with us.take it with a pinch of salt… (2002-09-18)
Sadly, both Michio Kushi’s wife and one daughter have died of cancer. Being that they were Japanese, the healthiest and longest lived people in the world, this doesn’t really speak well for the diet. However, macrobiotics, when taken with common sense, have been known to help cancer patients, some say to the extent of "curing" them. Follow your own instincts… and keep in touch with a trusted doctor!
