Not exactly a literal translation. (2008-02-19)
When I look for parallel text books, it is important to me that each book does an accurate job translating the original Spanish into its exact English equivalent. These books are training aids, and as such, I feel they need to uphold that accuracy as best as possible.

However, this book takes some liberties. The authors will take Spanish phrases and words, and mold them into English phrases and words that are chosen by their own taste in vocabulary. For the student who is learning one language or the other, it would seem very helpful if authors did not dance around a translation to make it sound good in English. I would much prefer a literal translation so that I can study the structure of each sentence, and note how the words are being used in context. When I read the word “tiempo precioso,” I expect to see “precious time” in English, not “valuable time,” or some other synonym. The latter phrase is not only used regularly in English, but it is a direct translation. This, of course, is an utmost basic example.

Once you highlight the loose interpretations in the book, you can continue studying the rest of the language. The stories are diverse and interesting enough to want to continue reading. I agree with other reviewers in that they are a bit dark in nature, but entertaining nonetheless.Challenging for Beginners (2008-02-17)
I love, love, love the Allende story, but generally found the stories selected for this book dark and depressing. No matter, I’m sure that many won’t agree with me. I just want to note that the vocabulary and sentence structure can be pretty challenging (I’m about intermediate), so this might not be suitable for beginners, but might be just what someone who is more advanced is looking for.not for me (2007-10-23)
I know, these are supposed to be great literary works. Sorry, not very interesting!Challenging! (2006-03-13)
Not quite as simple as I’d anticipated before purchase. If you are a beginner this would be a good book to help practise pronounciation - if you have someone around to correct you. As an intermediate learner this book is quite challenging especially since you translate the Spanish ‘literally’ and the English version is a proper translation, so after that initial shock it’s quite good reading. However, you also have to get over the idiomatic expressions. The stories are quite good otherwise and make a great read in English if the Spanish is too difficult.

Excellent learning tool (2006-03-13)
This book begins with easy stories, mostly in present tense. It progresses to more difficult stories. The stories are by Latino authors, so you have the additional bonus of Latino culture with the stories. The back of the book gives brief information about the authors. It includes exercises, some to be answered orally and others written, and a Spanish glossary. It’s a good tool to have in your “bag of tricks” for learning and improving your Spanish.

The new face of the West (2007-10-25)
Like many things in Exalted Second Edition the West has also gotten an entirely new face. No longer are the only things described the Lintha and a scant reference to the Tya. Here we get a thorough background of all the major islands and their histories. The back story of why women choose to become Tya has more to it now than just escaping the misogynistic cultures all over the West. You get a back story of the places as they were in the First Age, how they came about to their current state, and then how they act in modern times. The most interesting part has to be the new places that are situated UNDER the waves, Leviathan’s lost city of Luthe and the Pelagials (who now have a good reason for being) underwater home/shrine to their Yozi overlord.

This book is not required to have fun in Exalted, nor is it required to make a character from the West. But to have a good idea and for many adventures and premade NPCs, this book is wonderful.

Sadly, it is not perfect. Certain things are left unanswered, but not enough to really destroy the good points of this book. Plus, when Abyssals comes out you will have all the information on the Bodhisattva’s Skullstone Archipelago.

A Very Annoying Heroine (2007-08-07)
This was my first book by this author and I was very disappointed. While she does get a A++ for her research of the locale and Cajun dialect, I found the heroine , Laurel Chandler to be very annoying. If she was going to rehash her past experience as a DA and the case that lead to her downfall one more time I was ready to put the book in the trash. I wanted to scream, Get Over It and Move on! The rest of the characters , including Jack (who I failed to find appealing or sexy) were fair to midland. I found myself intrigued with what the handsome DA Steven was wearing. His wardrobe sounded straight from GQ. So much for the story!Tami, Tami, Tami…sigh (2007-05-01)
I have read a number of books by Tami Hoag and have pretty much enjoyed them all. Some I have enjoyed more than others, but generally, it is pretty safe to pick up one of her books and expect a good work with interesting characters and heroes and heroines you might actually care about. Laurel and Jack are difficult to care about. Since when are charm and obnoxious the same thing? Jack (es-corporate lawyer - what a hoot) and Laurel (Wallowing in self pity and self martyrdom-Get over it! Watch Law & Order. Even Jack McCoy loses a case now and then) Savannah? Let us not go there. She was so completely unlikable…I think the only mystery is why someone hadn’t killed her earlier. I kept going in this book only because of Hoag’s other works. This one was the earliest work by her that I have read. You know what this means, right? This is one of her Prior Bad Acts. Sorry. Anyway, this is not her best work. Had this been the first Tami Hoag book I had read, I would have not tried another. Fortunately it was not the first for me.Not my favorite Hoag book (2007-03-12)
Cry Wolf involves the unlikely relationship between two characters because of their “baggage.” This wasn’t my favorite Hoag book because I found the lead characters hard to really like. Now there have been other books with bad boys that slowly draw you in, but in this one, Jack is different. Laurel was okay and Savannah was a great character that I could visualize as well as many of the other lesser characters. Trademark Hoag style threads itself throughout the book which makes it worth finishing, but to recommend a Hoag book, this would not be it.Engrossing Southern romantic thriller (2006-08-03)
Cry Wolf is the first Tami Hoag book I’ve ever read. The story takes place in the wonderfully evocative setting of small-town Louisiana. Attorney Laurel Chandler returns home to lick her wounds after her divorce and the loss of a case involving abused children which led to her being dubbed the prosecutor who cried wolf. She moves in with her aunt and man-loving sister Savannah and meets Jack, best-selling horror writer and all-round cad. The story starts slowly focusing on Jack and Laurel’s budding romance, including an incident where Jack, who’s a little too fond of his bourbon and a manslut, almost crashes a car nearly killing both of them. Laurel seems a little too fond of whining and playing the victim.

Fortunately the pace speeds up after tragedy strikes close to home and Jack and Laura team up to bring the murderer to justice. A suspenseful ending and a plethora of interesting characters make up for the deficiencies of the main characters.not my favourite (2006-07-20)
it was a slow start to this book, i keep expecting hoag to grab my attention from the first sentence like her other books but it did not happened here…

the mystery part came late in this book and when it came, i was excited..here was laurel trying to get a fresh start but was drawn into the murder case involving women who “deserved to die because they slept around” which aso involved her sister..

the plot was interesting, the killer was playing a game with her, letting know who he was and when laurel knew who it was, she could not do anything not only due to lack of evidence but also lack of credibility as she was previously labelled as “the lawyer who cried wolf”

i was really excited to know how laurel’s going to pull it off but it was dissapointing on how it all ends…i expected more from hoag…

it could’ve been better

I will never just “read” the psalms again (2007-10-25)
For those looking for a christian spiritual path, or just want to learn to sing the psalms for group or private worship. These 4 CDs have a lot of depth. I loved them.

The majority of Psalm examples are sung in english. The audio book begins at a basic level so that you can start singing the psalms right away. Then the author gradually explores more complex aspects and spirituality of singing the psalms. I never understood the value of some of the more difficult/painful psalms before, and the daily office was a mystery to me. No more. The author also provides a very good explanation and examples of Lectio Divina. Once you have listened to this CD it is your choice whether to just enjoy putting the psalms to music or implement the deeper spiritual aspects.

The CD ends with a performance of Psalms for Lauds: Psalm 100, Psalm 63, Psalm 92, Benedictus, and Psalms for Vespers: Incense Rite, Psalm 84, Psalm 137, Magnificat for you to listen to or sing along. Very beautiful.

These CDs were fantastic. I highly recommend this audio book! I will never just “read” the psalms again.Singing the Psalms (2007-06-01)
Excellent! Not only a very good starting point for learning to chant the psalms but wonderful theology.Excellent, and practical teaching methods offered for novice (1998-10-15)
The material that Cynthia Bourgeault has assembled shows in a very real and practical manner how anyone can incorporate the Singing of the Psalms into their Church Worship Services. She has a great knowledge of both scripture and music. This will provide a Blessing for many.

Customer Reviews:
Never Again, again (2008-02-23)
We now know the basic story. Hutu extremists killed Tutsis and the world ignored them. The “International Community” from President Clinton to the Red Cross ignored Rwanda and allowed it to happen.

In Gourevitch’s book, he looks not only at those months but also afterwards. The struggle and continued animosity between Tutsis and Hutus led to the tangled web of involvement in the Congolese wars. Mobutu stood on one side; while Kabalia stood on the other.

The work itself is insightful and well-written. However, while he is quick to condemn the Hutu Power and the “international community” (both correct in being condemned) he does little to give similar condemnation of Paul Kagame or his compatriots who are now in charge in Rwanda.

The world stood by and ignored the genocide and all we can do now about it is say “Never Again,” again.

A indictment of the international response to genocide.. (2008-02-22)
Those who think “pece at all costs” would be well to read this. There are times when a person, a country, a WORLD, must take action. The Rwandan Genocide was one of those times.

The most sickening aspect of the tragedy of Rwanda–indeed all genocides–are that they were and are preventable.

Philip Gourevitch does a superb job of expressing his outrage over the lack of will displayed by the UN and US to the mass murder of the tutis by the Hutus’.

I highly recommend this book. This book should be required reading in high schools throughout the country. It is a real eye opener.Arrogance and Ignorance: How the World Failed Rwanda (2008-02-02)
It’s not easy to help other people, let alone other countries. Gourevitch’s book shows us how the international “community” managed to misstep over and over again in Rwanda, making an already tragic situation even worse, first through its inaction and then through its misguided charity. What makes Gourevitch’s thoroughly researched account of this tragedy so compelling is the way it focuses the reader’s attention on the circumstances that made this evil possible. This writer not only looks unflinchingly at the ugliest aspects of humanity, but he persists in peeling back the layers of human stories piled on stories, searching for the truth. As he points out early in the book, “…power consists in your ability to make others inhabit your story of their reality…” and in the case of such terrible human suffering, perhaps healing can come from the courageous effort to insist that this story be the most true account that we can discover.Africa is terrible (2007-12-18)
I read this good book, here in Brazil. This book is about the genocide, in Rwanda.Blacks exterminates other blacks, in massive numbers; hundreds of thusands. No religion- animism, christianism or muslin- did something with force to end this genocide. In all times, Africa is terrible.Important to read (2007-11-17)
This book deserves 5 stars- why? Read other full length reviews. I must say that you will get some strong stomach ache from reading it because the subject matter is very brutal.

Customer Reviews:
The importance of RESPECT (2008-01-17)
It is always written about how children just don’t show respect in this day and age. Well, to give respect, children need to receive respect and have respect modeled to them. What an eye opener! A very easy read with lots of priceless information! If only we were all raised this way (2007-11-09)
Respect and co-operation between parents and children - sounds impossible doesn’t it?? This book is very well written and gives really meaningful instructions for developing compassionate communication with your own children and others. Really makes you think about how you communicate with your children and points you in the direction of how to fulfill both yours and your childrens’ needs without experiencing conflict!

A very useful toolPhilosophical Conundrum (2007-10-15)
I have followed the principles in this book as well as other NVC books and love the quality of connection I have with my kids (ages 5 and 2). However, now that my older son is in Kindergarten, we’re dealing with a huge problem. The teacher has 24 kids in the class and does not have time to negotiate and find a win-win solution with each one. My son is getting in trouble almost every day for not following directions (i.e. clean up when everyone is cleaning up, not on his own schedule)and is starting to feel like a bad kid. Now I feel like we have to re-parent in some ways using a more ‘love-and-logic’ approach. I never wanted to be the kind of parent who says, “Do it because I said so.” But I now realize that kids need to learn to follow the rules so that they themselves can be happier in society. We now do a lot of talking about what a ‘team player’ does. This is a great book but for me, it’s missing the piece about teaching your kids to follow the rules, because that’s how school, work and much of society work. It’s wonderful for a parent and child to respect each other equally but this needs to be balanced with the idea that kid’s individual needs (or anyone’s for that matter) often cannot be accommodated. The philosophical conundrum for me is when to be the NVC parent and when to be the parent who says, “If you’re a member of this family, this is what we do (i.e. sit down all together for dinner).” I guess the perfect parenting approach is eclectic; borrowing a little from each theory.A+ parenting book! (2007-10-01)
Anyone with kids knows that it isn’t always easy to get your kids to “cooperate”. But in the novel guidebook Respectful Parents Respectful Kids, the authors probe parents to ask themselves, what do you mean by “cooperation”, “respect” and other expectations you have for your children? The handbook provides seven easy to follow keys for turning family conflict into cooperation. Written exercises help parents explore their own communication skills, emotional and physical needs, and problem areas in regards to parenting. As the authors write, this book “addresses the only behavior you can actually change - your own”. The book exposes why culturally accepted forms of parenting - lecturing, advising, making demands - don’t usually work. Then they provide a solution, based on the fact that at the heart of every conflict is a communication of needs.

The book is organized into three parts. 1) Foundations for Respect and Cooperation; 2) 7 Keys to Cooperation; and 3) Family Activities and Stories from the No Fault Zone. Non violent communication is a foundation of the book, and other Puddle Dancer Press books elaborate on the core ideas presented in this book. Don’t pass on this useful handbook, which teaches that respecting all family members’ needs equally will lead to a healthy, happy home.

This book will change your household for the better! (2007-10-01)
I can say from experience that communicating with children can be hard work. This book gave me great communication tools to motivate, instead of discipline, kids. And that’s what we all want, right? We want kids to choose to do what we want them to do on their own, not be punished into complying. This book unlocked some of the mysteries surrounding ineffective parenting - and explains why the most common parenting tactics, and common parenting language, don’t work. I tried them out already, and have noticed results! I now have a formula for cooperation! The book is a good balance though (I do not like child centered parenting where the parents become the door mats!) - and emphasizes that parents need to meet their needs first. Otherwise, parenting will fail, and really, the only person you can control is yourself. This book explains why changing your own behavior will result in positive behavior from your kids. There are “explore yourself” written exercise, where you explore how you truly feel, and what is really going on in your household, and in your emotional life in relation to parenting. The written exercise really revealed things about myself and my relationship to my children. The book is based on non violent communication and emphasizes compassion. I trust experts that are coming from that perspective. I’ve already recommended this to some of the parents in my daughter’s play group. Everyone can use the great advice from the experts who wrote Respectful Parents Respectful Kids.

Customer Reviews:
Baby enabling (2008-04-11)
I started my son using a little potty when he was about 6 months old. He pooped on it every morning for about 6 months, and we were both proud. He’s started an autonomous phase and is temporarily not using it, but I can imagine in the next couple months he will reunite with the ritual of using the potty like an old friend. In the mean time, it saved me 180+ diapers from washing.

“We as a parent spend 2-3 of the first years of our child life training them to go in diapers, thus conventional potty training is that of untraining them to go in diapers and to introduce the potty.”not helpful (2008-01-16)
None of the information in this book was new or helpful information. Basically the premise is the sit them on the potty at regular intervals and set a timer. This is not a new technique. There was very little insruction to it. She just repeated her philosophy. Not a good guide (2007-11-29)
As you may have guessed, this book advocates earlier potty training than is common in Western cultures today. At least half of the material is dedicated to making that point. Much of the argumentation is very aggressive and direct, with no evidence behind it. For example, the author scares you by stating that your child is likely to have more bladder infections if not potty-trained early and doesn’t indicate where that statistics comes from, what she means by “more” or whether you can trust that point.

As far as actual potty-training advice, it’s very limited. It made me feel like I must’ve missed something because there were pages and pages of information, but what did she actually say you should do to potty train? I went back again and again and found that there was almost nothing. A handful of anecdotes was all that I could use in practice.

I started my toddler at 14 months, armed with the advice that early potty training is a good idea, then quickly found it didn’t go very well. I stepped back and waited. It took a couple of months before he was willing to use the potty after that first week. Finally, I started again. More obstacles - but no solutions from the book…

I guess the book is written from the perspective of the person who thinks that potty-training is a natural thing and all you need is dedication - it’ll just happen by itself. I am still in favor of early potty training. But now I am shopping for a book, which will teach me how to do it.

I gave the book two stars instead of one because the author doesn’t teach you anything bad or harmful. She just doesn’t help very much.Convinced me to start EC (2007-10-14)
Before my daughter was born I started looking into information about elimination communication (infant potty training). I have been too overwhelmed to start, but this book convinced me that it was time to try. This book is not a very good how-to manual, but it gives great information about the benefits of early potty training. For how-to advice I recommend the DVD Potty Whispering: The Gentle Art of Infant Potty Training. Best of luck!!I plan to start even earlier with the next one! (2007-09-17)
I just wanted to say that I LOVE your toilet training book and I’ve not

only

recommended it to all my friends, but I’ve also bought several copies to

hand out. My mother had 3 girls and 2 boys trained by 15 months each,

and I

had my own daughter trained at 17 months day AND night. (we had a bit

of a

setback when my husband had to go away for work for a couple of months,

or

else I’m sure she would have been dry by 15 months too.) Both my

sisters’

kids are fully trained at 18 months, and thanks to your books, I’ve

convinced several of my friends to start training their babies and

toddlers

right away — even one mom who didn’t train her first one ’til he was 4,

and

is now training her 13 month old!

Anyway, keep up the good work and THANK YOU for being that ONE person

who

disagrees with the rest of this miserable country.

10th grade son (2007-09-06)
My son had a very hard time getting into the actual book. The vocabulary was so different he spent a lot of time on one page. I purchased the cliff notes for him to read. Once he understood what everything meant and the story itself, he really actually enjoyed reading the book. I would never substitute Cliff Notes for the actual book, but in this case it made a huge difference. Finished his report on time and I have no doubt he will do well on the test (using the Cliff notes as a study guide). My reluctance to use Cliff notes is slowly changing — using them more of a study guide in conjunction with the book. He will always be required to read the actual book.Read the Real Book (2002-02-07)
Only read Cliff’s Notes if your desperate, because the book is absolutly fabulous. You’re robbing yourself of a great book if you decide to skip the book and read the Cliff’s Notes.Great for Study Guides (2001-12-10)
In my English class we were required to read this book. Although I did read the novel we were told to complete a study guide with the novel. We were often asked to describe certain characters and the cliff notes helped a lot. Also if I missed a night of the reading it was simple just to scan the cliff notes and then read the novel in detail later. All in all, this cliff notes book was very helpful, but I do recommend that you read the novel because it is great.A essential if you are reading the book in a class (2001-06-11)
If you are in school and are reading this book in class then this is a essential item. I did not get the cliff notes for myself someone ales got them for me and I dint even think i needed them but they really helped me. Not to just understand the book but also were the author was coming from to. It really helped me and I highly recommend this.Great! (2001-05-11)
We had to read this book for school, and i was NOT looking forward to it. The class from last year had nothing but bad things to say about it. So I decided I would read a little bit just to keep up in our class discussions. Let me tell you, I was hooked! I couldn’t put it down! To Kill a Mockingbird is the best book I have ever read!!
