Architecture Without Bounds (2007-11-16)
I have watched Dubai evolve from an ancient middle eastern desert State to the most talked about architectually unique and cutting edge communities on the planet, where architectural creativity has no limits imposed. I purchased this book as a gift for an outstanding architect and he was captivated and inspired.

If you want to inspire the creative genius in anyone, of any profession, this story of the recent evolution of Dubai through architecture would be a perfect choice. The first book published solely on Dubai’s architecture and design (2006-10-09)
Dubai is the hub of the modern Middle East: a growing city sporting the world’s largest luxury hotel and more, but it’s important to note that DUBAI: ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN is the first book published solely on its architecture and design. Any interested in Middle Eastern culture and arts should have this, from college-level art libraries to specialty collection on the Mid East: it charts the roots of modern Middle Eastern design, pairing full-page color photos with insights on architectural achievement and history. While it’s a specialty item, its importance is unsurpassed for such holdings.

gives you the confidence you need to pass (2008-02-23)
This book is packed with over 350 questions and thorough answers.

Each exam objective gets hit with about 10-15 different questions, tackling the objective from every angle that is possible.

It’s hard to believe that anyone could go through this book, do all the questions, and not come out of the SCJA exam with an incredibly high score.do this before you take the exam (2008-01-30)
If you want a high score on the exam, start going through this book about a week before your exam date. When you write, make sure you can answer all the questions correctly and you know why certain answers are right, and why certain answers are wrong. The book provides all of thet information so it help you learn all of the really important things that might trip you up on the exam.A quick “SCJA Mock Questions” review (2008-01-14)
The book seems larger on the web, don’t let the photos trick you into thinking you are getting a huge book for the price. Although, the book seems to cover all the material and at close to 400 pages is probably a good deal. After all, there isn’t much out there on this subject available on public sites…(check with the school bookstores, but i dont think many people have spent much time writing textbooks on this subject)maybe thats why the publisher charges so much for a book thats only 8.5 x 5.5 inches!Helpful questions with solutions (2008-01-12)
The practise tests are thorough and the author explains the answers in detail. Its good to have if you already know java programming and you want to prepare for the SCJA test.Use it to get a killer-high-score on the exam. (2008-01-08)
I used this book and the SCJA guide SCJA Sun Certified Java Associate Study Guide for Test CX-310-019, 2nd Edition - Incredible Update to the former ExamScam Book from the same publisher. To pass, the study guide will get you there, but if you want a really high score on the exam, I suggest you pick up this book as well. It’s got over 350 exam questions - like writing the SCJA exam 7 times before you actually take the test. You can’t get much more prepared than that.

My daughter cried. (2007-08-03)
I picked up a copy of the Doubtful Guest because I heard Steven Speilberg optioned the rights to turn this into a movie. Not sure how he’s going to do it, because there really isn’t a story to tell. It’s about a weird-looking penguin that shows up at a house and doesn’t leave. Big whoop. I love the art. I like the whole idea of the story. And I’m sure at the time, it was what children’s book critics would consider ‘avant-garde’ and a bit dark. But, it just didn’t do it for me. I read it to my daughter. She was so angry that she grabbed the book out of my hands, took it over to the fireplace and threw into the fire. Then she went PFFFTHTTPT! Whatever that means! Maybe she was tipsy on the expired-date cow’s milk she was drinking. Maybe it was because she was teething. Maybe it was because she’s only a year old, but she didn’t like it at all. Would I tell someone else to buy this book? Not really. Although, on a personal note, I may check out more of Gorey’s work. This guy may have been on to something.Gorey Beautiful (2007-02-07)
A macabre classic. Perfect for any collection. Adds a little whimsy to any day you open the cover.A Gorey story for kids and adults (2006-03-18)
Edward Gorey’s humor is delightfully absurd. Although this particular tale is unlike any other Gorey story, the humor and pen & ink illustrations are beautifully done and unmistakably Gorey.“It Betrayed A Great Liking For Peering Up Flues…” (2005-01-13)
This is my single favorite Edward Gorey book, partially because of the amusing couplets it is written in, but mostly because of the appearance of the guest himself, which never ceases to amuse me. The concept of a strange creature who mysteriously visits and decides to stay (seventeen years) while exercising odd whims (like fits in which he removes all towels from the bath or hiding inside a soup tureen) is particularly suited to Gorey’s odd brand of humor (although it is not one of his more unusual books, by any stretch of the imagination.)

I have liked Edward Gorey since I was in my teens, and still find him as unique and entertaining as ever. This is my very favorite Gorey book, and would make an excellent introduction to one of the oddest cartoonists of the twentieth century.

Grab your galoshes (2003-12-05)
You will not be doubting this book as a guest on your shelf. The Doubtful Guest is a Gorey masterpiece in all its pawky nature. If you find that you are fond of it, you might drop it in the pond, as the doubtful guest does to things it’s fond of: “It would carry off objects of which it grew fond, And protect them by dropping them into the pond.” You’ll surely be all wet if you do, because you’ll want to fetch it out for a read quite often.

The basics of team-based work (2007-12-10)
This helpful guide from the Harvard Business Essentials Series will put you on the right track, whether you have just been assigned to a team or are considering forming a team to tackle a project. The writing is clear and concise, the advice is solid and the business principles are spot on. If you seek a guide about how to put a team together, get a project underway and manage it to fruition, you would be hard pressed to find better fundamental information in so few pages. We recommend this book to all aspiring team leaders, team members and managers.A solid and concise text and effective teams (2007-11-02)
This is a very solid guide from the folks at Harvard Business School Press that provides the basics of how to create, use, and manage teams. It opens with a discussion of what a team is and is not (workgroups are not teams, for example) and the kind of work that teams are best suited for. The book also lays out the essentials for creating a team and what kinds of things the company must provide for it to succeed. Too many companies form teams and then proceed to undermine their work every step of the way. So, if you are going to be responsible for a team, this material can be vital to you before you agree to head out into the wilderness of your project.

The information on how to form, constitute, and launch a team is terrific as is the advice supplied for the team manager. The first key is that the team leader is never to be in the “boss” role. The material provided on how to function as a team, how to work in a virtual team, and why you have to be a great team member to be an effective team leader is also very good.

This is a solid, concise, and basic text that can help anyone get their team off to a great start and to avoid most of the land mines as you do you work.

The Art and Science of Effective Teamwork (2005-07-10)
This is one of the volumes in the new Harvard Business Essentials Series. Each offers authoritative answers to the most important questions concerning its specific subject. The material in this book is drawn from a variety of sources which include the Harvard Business School Press and the Harvard Business Review as well as Harvard ManageMentor®, an online service. I strongly recommend the official Harvard Business Essentials Web site (www.elearning.hbsp.org/businesstools) which offers free interactive versions of tools, checklists, and worksheets cited in this book and other books in the Essentials series. Each volume is indeed “a highly practical resource for readers with all levels of experience.” And each is by intent and in execution solution-oriented. Although I think those who have only recently embarked on a business career will derive the greatest benefit, the material is well-worth a periodic review by senior-level executives.

Credit Richard Luecke with pulling together a wealth of information and counsel from various sources. He is also the author of several other books in the Essentials series. In this instance, he was assisted by a subject advisor, Jeff Polzer, who is an associate professor of organizational behavior at Harvard Business School. Together, they have carefully organized the material as follows.

Team Concepts: Understand These First

Essentials for an Effective Team: The Foundations of Success

Forming the Team: The Crew and Its Charter

Getting Off on the Right Foot: Important First Steps

Team Management Challenges: Where Leaders [and Leadership] Matter

Operating as a Team: Putting Ideas [and Insights] to Work

The Virtual Team: A Collaborative Challenge

Becoming a Team Player: Your Most Important Assignment

Please note the sequence of subjects addressed. Luecke and Polzer offer a step-by-step process which is cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective. Throughout their narrative, they provide an abundance of observations, suggestions, caveats, strategies, tactics, and checklists which really do comprise “the complete skill set to build powerful and influential teams.” Then in the three appendices, they provide useful implementation tools, a guide to effective coaching, and a “Troubleshooting Guide” because any human enterprise — especially one which requires effective cooperation, collaboration, and communication — is certain to encounter all manner of problems, especially when those initiatives challenge what Jim O’Toole has characterized as “the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom.”

This volume will be most valuable to decision-makers in those organizations (regardless of size or nature) which are either planning to respond to opportunities as well as problems by creating “a team with an edge,” or, are now thinking about doing so. I know of no other single volume which can be of greater assistance to those decision-makers, whatever their current circumstances may be. That said, it would be foolish to depend entirely on a single source for guidance, albeit one as insightful and practical as this one is. Rigorous, sometimes painful soul-searching must first be completed. In a perfect world, everyone in a given organization cooperates, collaborates, and communicates effectively. In reality, that is true of very few organizations. For all others, a team can be created and then generously supported whose mission is to solve a given problem or exploit an opportunity but one which, in process, also demonstrates HOW to complete any other mission with effective cooperation, collaboration, and communication.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out all other volumes in Harvard Business Essentials Series as well as O’Toole’s Leading Change, Evan I. Schwartz’s Juice: The Creative Fuel That Drives World-Class Inventors, Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith’s The Wisdom of Teams: Creating the High-Performance Organization, Warren Bennis and Patricia Ward Biederman’s Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration, Dorothy A. Leonard, Walter C. Swap’s When Sparks Fly: Harnessing the Power of Group Creativity, Gary Harpst’s Six Disciplines for Excellence, Carla O’Dell’s If Only We Knew What We Know: The Transfer of Internal Knowledge and Best Practice, and Jason Jennings’ Think Big, Act Small: How America’s Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive.A solid book about Teams (2004-12-14)
I enjoyed this book about teams, it provided very good overal information on all of the different stages teams go through from start to finish. The book also included things that must be done, and things to avoid.

This book will prepare the reader well to tackle challenging tasks with their teams. It will help determine what should be done individually, as a work group or as a team. Something I have personally experienced myself that they covered really well is the need to define the projet well as you assemble your teams, and also to define measures of success, roles, communcations methods and decision rules to be used by the team leader - Team leaders will find it very useful.

Also a small section on vitual teams working together remotely which I think could have been more extensive, but still covered all of the needs of a virtual team, including the need to meet face to face at the start of the project to build the teamwork and cooperation spirit of the team.

What I did not like? The main thing is that the book looked at teams mostly from the point of view of a large organization. Not much talk about small teams operating from small to medium enterprises, and how smaller and more flexible teams can also bring great benefits.

Comments and your feel about this book? email me to discuss.

Thanks

A very good book on teams overall.

it will change your and your baby’s life (2007-08-01)
I bought this and many other books by Dr. Doman on a recommendation by a friend, who followed these books when her children were young. Both went to Stanford and the daughter continued to Harvard Law school.

I bought these books for my 3 month old granddaughter and hope that my son and daughter-in-law will let me teach her.

The book is very clear and easy to follow. The best children’s education book I’ve ever read (2007-05-07)
I have no words to say how happy I am with this book. I read it just a few days before taking the course ‘How to multiply your baby’s intelligence’ in Madrid, two weeks ago.

If you want to read a Doman book, this is the one I reccomend you to start with. It is the one that gives you the broadest idea of his thoughts and theories. it is just so incredible and exciting, and if you already have a kid and have not started the Doman program right from birth, you will probably think ‘ oh my god, why haven’t I read this book before?’. It is not a tragedy, you can and should start a program right away.

I have two kids, ages three and one, and i have started the program with them. I guess it is working pretty well.

I also took the course and was the best thing that happened in my life, after my children, nephews and husband! I enjoyed it so very much that I am taking the graduate course next week, in Philadelphia. Travelling from Italy to the USA to meet Doman in person! cannot wait!

HIGHLY ; SUPER ;ABSOLUTELY reccomend this book.. my rate to this item is 5, but if I could write a number myself it wold probably be 5 million!

Silvia BilacchiBuy the Other Books (2007-04-06)
Doman’s books are a must read, but this book is just a summary of all other books. I still give a 5 star because it gives a good overview.

Start reading How to teach to Read and then How to Teach Math. If you are into it, go to Encyclopedic knowledge. Then take their courses, in Philadelphia, but they are a couple of thousand dollars. Do it all before your baby is born. I read this book 10 years before my wife got pregnant and it changed my life… and my daughter’s (I hope). Now she is 3. But don’t get too carried away. Believe me, some parents do get carried away. The ones in Philadelphia seem to belong to a sect. Just enjoy your children and add this to the fun. I took the course in Philadelphia but I really don’t do much of the program. Still, I raise my daughter differently from what I would otherwise have done without having read this book. You will not be the same person after you read it. And it is not about teaching your baby to read. It is about teaching your baby about life.

You will have more respect for your child and will not let your baby grow “by accident.” Instead, you will be able to actively participate in the learning process and challenge your child to fulfill his or her intellectual potential. If you have a child, or if you don’t but you love someone, this is the only book that you must read. Remember, read it before the baby is born. This book (or the others in the collection) are a wonderful present for an expecting mother. This book should be completely free (2007-02-12)
First 1/2 of the book explains why intelligence is good. Second 1/2 explains how to do it. But the how-to(s) are so general. This book acts like an advertisement material to get you to buy other books so in my opionion, this book should be FREE, instead of wasting your money on it. The title is misleading…it should read “Why multiply your Baby’s Intelligence-& how to buy our other books.”Skip it (2006-05-03)
The book is a great book if you’re “just looking.”

If you are at all serious…or might be serious about teaching your child, skip this book and just get the others.

I didn’t feel this book had in depth information on any of the programs; you would end up buying or borrowing the other books anyway.

Strong Voice - Honest and Bold (2008-03-26)
I have read a few reviews that where readers preferred the Disneyfied movie to the strong and honest look at a real human life that Chris Gardner exposits in his book. That’s a bit sad. I find his honesty refreshing and courageous in a world where many look askance on the rougher edges of our humanness while ignoring the courage it takes to reveal warts.

This book inspired me and is about to change my life. It is the portrait of a man who never succumbed to self pity in spite of many odds stacked against him. He did not give in to bitterness either. He blamed no one for his plight, simply pushed forward and found solutions to each crisis he faced. He has set an example for the many people of all races recovering from abusive childhoods.

It is not so easy to get the demons of low self worth and self pity out of your head when they have been placed there by parental figures and communities either convinced of their own moral superiority or simply exercising their own brand of ignorance over a childhood span of 18 years. It is a struggle, daily, until it is rebuilt and often times depends solely on the kindness of strangers who may or may not be from the polished set.

The fact that he prevailed from sheer dogged determination and a refusal to accept the labels others applied to him is a wondrous and beautiful thing and should spark hope into the hearts of those who know his story all too well from personal experience.

If you prefer the pristine bubble of a Disneyified existence, stick to the movie. If you are not afraid of the grit of human life and are not easily offended, read the book. It is far superior and much more satisfying. Not as good as the movie it inspired, but inspiring in its own right (2008-03-22)
If you’re interested in reading the book because you saw and loved the movie, you should be forewarned that you will find the effect of the movie somewhat diluted here, and also that the movie’s version of events matches in very few particulars the actual events of his life as recorded in his autobiography.

That said, the book provides much more background about Chris Gardner’s life, and it is a fascinating and ultimately triumphant story–and, in the latter part of the story, his commitment to his son does shine through.

His idol-worshipping meeting with Nelson Mandela at the end is a bit much, but otherwise Gardner’s story is told with admirable sincerity and intelligence. And best of all, he’s completely unapologetic about pursuing material wealth and prosperity, and saying that these are part of his pursuit of happiness. People who’ve been dirt poor are typically more honest about things like that than the self-righteous idiots who’ve been comfortable all their lives and never really had to work and then tell us sanctimoniously that “money can’t buy happiness”–true, it can’t, but it sure helps.

And Chris Gardner’s story is well worth the money. This book is a complete waste of time (2008-02-23)
If Chris Gardner had any morals I’m sure they wouldn’t have come out in this book as he goes to great lengths to tell you every sexual exploit he’s made in his lost, disgusting, immoral life. I couldn’t finish it. Talk about all his sexual escapades! …and his inability to keep his d**k in his pants, and worse still, his inability to keep a wife because of it! He’s a moral black hole taking thousands of susceptible people with him into the depths of crude, rude, disgusting, immoral, sex addiction-type behavior. There’s nothing HAPPY about this book!

I just threw mine away. If it would have fit in the toilet I would have flushed it. I’m sure it would have gotten stuck in the u-bend causing me even more misery to add to the misery I felt reading this life-sucking black hole of a book.

Big Time Deflated (2008-02-09)
Where the movie of the same name lifted me and inspired me, this book came crashing down on me. It crushed me because it turns out nothing in the movie was true. In fact, far from being the hero that Will Smith portrayed on film, the real Chris Gardner turns out to be a skank, a thief and a murderous thug. The fact that Gardner retains these attributes through to the end of the book and continues to defend them means there is no happy story of redemption and thus, no real happy ending (except that the man is now rich).

Structurally, the book was supposed to be about a father’s love for his child but Gardner’s son doesn’t enter the story until 2/3rds of the way through. Even then, the book continues on into exposition of the father’s life, so it is more like a biography. I did like the writer’s style but since the book was co-written, I doubt if it was Gardner himself that I was reading.

If you loved the movie, do not buy this book. Continue to believe that Will Smith’s character was an honest, moral man who deserved the success he got because he pursued it ethically and persisted against his hardships without complaint.Perseverance (2007-12-21)
Chris Gardner’s journey demonstrates we can all obtain the best results in our lives when we focus on where we want to go as opposed to our present circumstances.

Best starter (2006-07-12)
This is the best little book I have found for those wanting just a basic starter in the law. It is concise and clear, a good overview for the summer before law school or those considering applying.Excellent primer on the study of law (2002-07-16)
This is a book, along with _Bramble Bush_, by Karl Llewellyn, and _Introduction to Legal Reasoning_, by Edward Levi, that all prospective law students ought to read. Ms Nygren’s method is to introduce the prospective law student to the concept and strategy of legal thinking and legal study.

In her introduction, she cites two reasons for having written the book: (1) to provide information about the legal system, and (2) to provide information about the study skills necessary for success.

These two themes are repeatedly addressed in this book. It is very tightly focused and dry, but if you push yourself through the book you will learn a lot. Ms Nygren starts the book with a hypothetical situation–in which you, the reader, are a lawyer, and a client comes in with a complaint about a restaurant’s food–and then she takes you through the process of identifying the legal issues in the case, how to advocate for your client, et cetera. Though she addresses only very small portion of "the law"–the liability faced by a restaurant–the detailed and close manner in which she takes the reader through this portion of the law is of obvious relevance to the rest of the law.

Ms Nygren provides a very comprehensive introduction to the structure of legal reasoning, and the kind of thinking needed by law students who wish to excel in their studies.Necessary and sufficient (2001-04-10)
This short book is clear, helpful and on target. I read it most of it before starting law school last year. The book accurately describes the legal learning process, the process of the law, and the experience of law school. This book is a must read for anyone heading to law school.A great place to start when considering law school! (1999-05-01)
This book offers a wonderful base of knowledge for someone who is considering lawschool who has little to no pre-law experience (e.g. someone with an English or History degree). It gives the reader a good sense of understanding of the legal system with easy to understand definitions and examples. Through the use of one particular legal issue, and the help of several different case examples, the author enables the reader to see the legal process as it goes forward and backwards through the court system. You finish this book with a much clearer understanding of what to expect from law school, from casebooks to exams, and what you may be able to expect in professional lawyer/client setting. It even recommends and illustrates helpful ways to study and make it through that difficult first year. For such a tiny book it covers and enormous distance from start to finish. I highly recommend it.

The subjects multiply of these 25 great essays… from wolves and hunters… to a woman with deseases… to a man fascinated with people named like him… to a guy who remembers his uncle’s strange apartment meetings… and so on…

All of those texts are written with a unique style and a rare passion who raised my interest everytime I took the book and started to read.

In fact, while some of the essays here didn’t have a subjecto who’d speak to me on a personal level, the thing is… they are all so well written that I just kept on reading. And I did found more to this genre than I used to see.

I recomend this book to writers, readers and just anybody in for a great reading ride.

Mr. Gutkind did a marvelous job collecting theses texts. That must be said.

The introduction (notes for young writers) is also an awesome way to introduce the wonders of this genre.

Highly recomended.Impossible to put down and short pieces whice can be browsed through at will (2006-03-29)
For those unfamiliar with Lee Gutkind, she was instrumental in working on an creating one of my favorite literary publications, Creative Nonfiction. Each issue was devoted to a particular subject, from Family to Intimate Matters or Surviving Crisis.

Just last night, in fact, I read one of the pieces from one of those publications, an essay called “Shunning” which told of the loss of identity faced by a pregnant teen in the 60s, during a time when getting pregnant outside of marriage could cause everyone to turn their backs on a person.

Now I”m thrilled that Gutkind has compiled some of the best examples of Creative Nonfiction. Not only because I’m already a fan of her work but also because I love reading but am short on time. This book is perfect because it allows me to start and finish an entire piece in the book without having to set aside hours to do so. I don’t HAVE to read it in a few days or one or two sittings.

I urge you to experience the joys of Creative Nonfiction, especially as compiled by someone as discerning as Gutkind.

It is great for those who have to read in fits and starts, perhaps while waiting to pick up a kid after school or while waiting in line at the drive-up window at the bank. In short, it is perfect for taking with you while on a trip, on the run or when you have a few minute in your day to sit down, have a cup or coffee (or snack) and let one of the many wonderful writers in this volume take you away from you usual routine. An Overlooked Genre On A New & Exciting Spin! (2006-03-18)
I enjoyed this book SO much, I can’t recommend it enough! Creative Nonfiction is a relatively new genre, or overlooked. But the genre has now come to the forefront, and it is DIVINE! Lee Gutkind assimilated some fantastic “creative nonfiction” authors, and the result is that of a creme brulee. (really, if you love books as much as I do, you’ll understand what I mean. Some people simply assume that nonfiction books are dry, and boring. NOT. “In Fact: The Best Of Creative Nonfiction” surprised me, and basically kept me glued to the book. I finished it in one night, and for me, that is rare. But the writers that Mr. Gutkind chose for this undertaking are so perfect for this genre, and it was a highly interesting read. I can’t recommend it enough! BUY IT NOW!
