Buy this book! (2008-03-15)
I highly recommend this book. I am just getting into Indian cooking and have found the recipes easy to prepare and delicious to eat. My family and dinner guests have all enjoyed the meals I’ve prepared from Quick and Easy Indian Cooking. Great book.Easy and Delicious (2008-02-12)
We love Indian food, but with two young children, rarely find the time necessary to prepare it. This book is fantastic! We’ve owned it for a month and have already made a dozen or more recipes. All have been delicious, and all have been, true to its title, quick and easy to prepare. Highly recommended. Because the recipes are easy to make, it would be a good introduction for those new to the cuisine. For my taste, the amount of salt called for in the recipes is too high, but in all other regards, it is our favorite cookbook (at the moment). The recipes I have tried were both easy and delicious! (2008-01-14)
This is an excellent cookbook for people who love Indian food but are easily intimidated by the laundry list of hard-to-purchase spices. The recipes are easy & delicious!Yummy. (2008-01-07)
This cookbook has many interesting yet simple (simple-looking, at least) recipes.
So far, we’ve only cooked one recipe from this book (Cauliflower soup). The book was worth it for that recipe alone. Simple and tasty!
outstanding cookbook (2007-10-11)
Madhur Jaffrey, a highly regarded writer on Indian food, does not disappoint in this book. She’s a beautiful writer and presents Indian cuisine in an approachable, informative form. She thoughtfully includes menu suggestions, which is most appreciated!

The book concludes with biographical notes from each author.Excellent textbook for writing course (2004-01-26)
I have been using this book for over a year now for the story writing course I tutor online. The very wide range and style of stories makes it ideal for this purpose and helps to stimulate discussion. I have also had very positive feedback from students: None regretted purchasing the book. The most popular story without a doubt proved to be Nicola Barker’s "G-String".
There are some very strong showings here from Al-Shaykh, Margaret Atwood, T.C. Boyle, Olen Butler, Peter Carey, Lydia Davis, N. Englander, Richard Ford, Pawel Huelle, Edward P. Jones, C. McCann, Bobbie Ann Mason, Mary Morris, H. Murakami, Francine Prose, Salman Rushdie, Graham Swift, Tatyana Tolstaya, L. Valenzuela, Tobias Wolff … and others.
A few stories made me scratch my head as to why they had been selected; but overall this is a challenging, diverse, high-voltage anthology. Even if you read short stories compulsively, you’re bound to discover some new writers or rediscover a writer you thought you knew.Superb sampling of short fiction (2002-09-26)
Gone are the days when a writer could earn a living publishing short stories in magazines because gone, too, are the days when most people read them. That’s a shame, as this anthology demonstrates, because short fiction offers pleasures to the reader, and challenges to the writer, which are unavailable in longer forms. Like shots of liqueur, they can pack a mighty punch. “Short” doesn’t mean a story can’t be complex or moving, or can’t address expansive themes. Indeed, that the better short stories achieve precisely those things is one measure of their greatness. Daniel Halpern’s selections here prove it. His anthology not only gives hours of reading pleasure, but also provides an indispensable resource for aspiring writers: these stories display such an amazing range of themes, styles and narrative structures, they make it a veritable showcase of approaches to storytelling. For the student of literature, they offer condensed examples of how writers do their work. Of course, not everything can appeal in a volume of this size, but for me there were some highpoints: “Dharma”, a moving ghost story by Vikram Chandra; the cleverly historical “The Green Man” by Jeanette Winterson; the almost casually powerful “Talking Dog” by Francine Prose; “Midnight and I’m Not Famous Yet”, a Vietnam memoir by Barry Hannah; “Everything in This Country Must”, a child’s perspective on Northern Ireland, by Colum McCann; “The Girl Who Left Her Sock on the Floor” by Deborah Eisenberg and “The Lifeguard” by Mary Morris, both of which deal with death and adolescence; the immensely moving “Evermore” by Julian Barnes; the domestic suspense of “A Family Dinner” by Kazuo Ishiguro; and the heartbreaking lament of “Intimacy” by Hanif Kureishi - which, I assume, is the seed which grew into his novel of the same name. Ironically, Kureishi’s story shows precisely what can be achieved in the short form: for my money, it’s better than his novel.Short and Sweet (2001-04-17)
Although I have yet to read all of the stories in this book, I’m sure that someday I will. I bought this book for a college literature course and plan on saving it for rainy days. The stories in this book come from writers at home and abroad, complete with a wide range of topics, some that are seen in everyday life and others that include the perils of war and May/December relationships (Aren’t You Happy for Me- my personal fave). I gave this book four stars because some of the stories I found dry in content. But I think that there are enough topics to cover a wide range of enjoyment for all readers. Enjoy!

Terrible (2008-04-08)
Todd Perkins is the worst teacher I have ever encountered. He’s very good at explaining over and over everything that is obvious, and he leaves out what you need to know in order to actually do anything. It’s frustrating.Binding nightmare (2008-04-02)
This is the worst book I ever have. The content is good but the book quality is extrememly poor. Book fall apart badly after reading. There is a binding issue during printing. If one wants to use the book often, I don’t recommend it. If only use one time, may be it’s ok for all the pages falling out of book after reading. I replaced with Amazon three times for the same book. Everyone of them suffer for the same problem. This was a very painful processes. Amazon customer service were very lousy and hard to deal with. Anyway, nothing bad about content, but book itself and Amazon customer service are the big draw back for this book.AWFUL Binding (2008-03-10)
The book is very elementary. That’s good if you want bullet-proof hand holding through tutorial examples.
The binding makes the book unusable — as I worked through the examples pieces fell out. Now I have half a dozen piles of paper instead of a book.Flash CS3 Hands-On (2008-03-04)
I like the content, well written, but like others I am noticing very poor binding a few weeks after purchase. Clumps of pages dropping out.Good book, but I have only scratched the surface. (2008-02-27)
This seems to be a strong resource but I honestly have not gotten that deep into.

One of the best on the subject (2007-10-25)
I think this is one of the best books on this subject that I have read so far- very practical, very useful. There is a lot of information, real-life examples and experience from the .NET framework design team.Simply the best (2007-08-09)
As a professional I have worked many times on building re-usable and extensible frameworks. Therefore, I had to read several books in order to make sure that the framework I was building was doing what it was supposed to do. However, in all these years I had never the luck to get a complete guide of “building a framework the right way” and I had to always put together pieces from different articles in order to make my own guide. Well, there you have it! Buy this book, read it and you will have a complete guide of how to do things the right way. Another great thing about this book is that different professionals make their comments about almost every guideline. As a result you are not only exposed to writer’s view but also to the views and opinions of many well respected software professionals. Do buy this book and as hard as it might seem try to apply its recommendations to your daily development process.Passionate About Quality? (2007-08-07)
I don’t personally think that all developers will find this book useful. In fact, I have a feeling that some may find it highly useless and disruptive as it is abstract in a sense (one must apply the lessons to each library and scenario independently, taking into consideration many different aspects of usability and readability) and it does require some “retraining” of bad practices which have been long since ingrained due to years of usage.
But whether this book deserves a five star rating or a one star rating - whether this book is for you - can be answered by asking yourself the following question: are you obsessed with quality? Quality in the sense of creating a library that is:
- Easily reused by others, even first timers encountering the library or even first timers to .Net
- Well thought out with well designed classes
- Consistent within itself and consistent with the base libraries from Microsoft
The importance of the little things like naming classes, properties, methods, using one type of construct over another, using one type of accessor over another, etc. cannot be stressed enough in the overall picture of creating a library to a higher standard of quality, usability, and extensibility.
As Confucius is to have said:
“If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success.
“When affairs cannot be carried on to success, proprieties and music do not flourish. When proprieties and music do not flourish, punishments will not be properly awarded. When punishments are not properly awarded, the people do not know how to move hand or foot.
“Therefore a superior man considers it necessary that the names he uses may be spoken appropriately, and also that what he speaks may be carried out appropriately. What the superior man requires is just that in his words there may be nothing incorrect.”
As I wrote in an e-mail to my team, I think that digesting this book will lead to: higher quality public facing APIs for our customer development teams seeking to extend the functionality, increased readability and more consistency internally in our teams, increased usability and decreased maintenance costs for the support teams as well as new developers on our team, and of course, increased skill, knowledge, and competency as developers of each of the team members.A must have for any C# Developer or Architect (2007-06-10)
If you need to write C#/.Net or even Java, this book is a must have. For the individual who wants to rise above the masses (2007-01-14)
In my role as CTO of a software firm, many developers ask me ‘what can I do to move up to the architect/team lead role’.
Unfortunately it has as much to do with ’soft skills’ in many cases and hard ones. Not good with people? It will be tough no matter what you read. This book however, is mandatory in my opinion if you are in this domain (and even in others as it is such an excellent example of what building a good reusable framework is all about, be it Java, COBOL or C#).
I would like to add something I believe others have missed. Although this book covers one dimension, you really need to cover the ‘Domain Driven Design and Development’ aspect for true optimal OO Framework reuse. Although this book is excellent, it should be supplemented with Eric Evan’s work on Domain Driven Design in my strong opinion. Otherwise the full benefit would not be reached. This also adds complexity as it is assumed that an ORM framework is used, which today (early September 2007) means NHibernate. Perhaps some day Linq to Entities will work, but NHibernate is really a non-optional aspect now in reusable framework development (as are Mock frameworks, inversion of control and dependency injection, automated build server infrastructure, and much more that NEITHER book covers).
It’s not for everyone, especially the lone wolf writing in his garage in a team of 1. If you have any code that would ever even have the chance of being reused (and even if you do not, you should write code such that it will), and if you are on a team of 2 or more, it is very, very hard not to implore you to read this.
Kind Regards,
Damon Carr

North Pole - South Pole - Brilliant concept, better execution (2007-01-05)
If you are a fan of Galen’s work you will certainly enjoy this book. The concept, comparing and contrasting the two poles, is brilliant.
The photographs are typical Galen - beautiful, engaging, illuminating. The accompanying text provides context and insight.
There is an essay section at the back that provides some insight into how Galen thought about the photos that appear in this book. Very interesting reading and a great teaching aid for amateur photographers and photojournalists.A MUST-HAVE picture volume (2003-09-26)
Wow, what a great and such awesome picture volume. This book not only shows you pictures from the Arctic and the Antarctic, it particularly reveals the true differences between the two polar regions…they ARE truly different and fascinating! This book also delivers very-high quality photography, which can easily tempt you into travelling to such exotic destinations.
In the book, you will find 2 pictures side by side-one showing the Arctic, the other showing Antarctic. That way, you will get an idea of its differences. In addition, there is a separate chapter that dedicates to interesting stories regarding these regions, anything from life in Siberia, Inuit life in northern Alaska, to the South Georgia Islands & the South Pole. Last, but not least, there is also a whole section reviewing all the pictures showed in the book, including background information describing each photo, etc.
This is truly an amazing picture volume that is a MUST-HAVE for any polar fanatic. Get prepared for over 180 pages of some superb photography and much info on these fantastic regions. For the money, it was quite worth it…GREENLAND REVISTED THROUGH A LITTLE DANE’S EYES. (1998-12-26)
Turning to page 74, my Danish-born wife, Aino, was amazed to discover her little town of Scoresbysund. She spent her fomative years(age 5-12)growing up there, where her father, Dr. Werner Mortensen, served as the sole doctor for the area of 3 villages.
Galen Rowell’s photography captures the typical beauty of a Scandinavian mileau, even though it is truly a facade for the garbage that the typical native Greenlander casts no further than his front door!
His words portray the many problems of the native Inuits, who have been unable to adapt to the influence of Danish culture and progress. For Rowell to elaborate on the problems of alcholism, violent crime, and the high rate of suicide in a village of only 500, distinguishes him as an author that researchs his subjects quite well! It brought back memories for my wife of the "Grundlander" that beat his wife with the carcass of a frozen seal, only to have his wife bite of his ear.
The large yellow building in the left foreground is the eight bed hospital; the little red house with white trimmed windows that is over to the immediate left is where family Mortensen grew up from 1966-72. This book really takes my wife back, and helps me see things that were only in her mind’s eye. It also brings her up to the what the present day Scoresbysund has become. And now that my family will be moving to Fairbanks,Alaska, my wife can get a sneak preview of our future from this marvelous book. Having lived in Alaska myself, I definitely recommend this book for its shear splendid photography and candid commentary. Great job Galen!Experience the stunning beauty of the Earth’s poles! (1996-05-15)
This is much more than a coffee table book, though its unique photographs of the pristine beauty of the Arctic and Antarctic would impress even the most casual of browsers. A short story about each photo is included, along with more general, thoughtful and poignant commentary from someone that is truly in touch with the global environment. Rowell is one of the great nature photographers, and this is a stunning collection

An excellent historical account of this battle with commentary included (2008-04-20)
After seeing the movie version starring Mel Gibson based on this book, I wanted to read the historical account of the battle. Lt Gen Moore and Joseph Galloway do an excellent job describing the details in sequence of the two phases of the Ia Drang battle in the Viet Nam war (the movie covers the first phase only) including both facts and personal accounts of the battle. Lt Gen Moore’s introductory chapter is an excellent commentary about our entry into the war especially concerning the mindset of those who first fought in this first big American battle in Viet Nam. The book presents stories of the individuals who fought in both phases of the battle in their own words, which is a strong point of the book. Lt Gen Moore’s descriptions and comments are interspersed with these personal accounts of the battle, and a number of pictures of these individuals are included.
The last part of the book is most excellent. Here, the authors set up the second phase of the battle at LZ Albany and describe it from the viewpoint of those who were involved. The reader can anticipate the assault that follows. I also appreciate the chapter that follows up with the families of those who died in battle concerning how they have dealt with the loss of their loved one since then. It is very moving.
I strongly recommend this book for people who have seen the movie version and want to read what actually happened in this battle. It is also good for students of history (this is an excellent military history) and political science (Lt. Gen. Moore’s comments about our involvement in Vietnam are very insightful).probably the most accurate and precise accounts of a major action in Vietman (2008-02-22)
Joe and General Moore narrate a precisely written, no frills account of the first major action between two excellent commanders and their superbly trained troops. The work does not describe battle as glamorous or noble; it recounts the horror, the pain, chaos, acts of courage, and of sacrifice that is part and parcel of the fog of battle. Utterly straight forward with no holds barred. If you want confirmation of my review please read General Moore’s AAR (after action report). You find the matter of fact narrative and analysis of the battle in General Moore’s report. I consider it an honor to know Joe personally and consider him one of the most acute correspondents and journalists of this century. Essential reading for anyone hoping to make sense of the Vietnam War.
Jim PayneWe Were Soldiers Once— And Young (2008-01-09)
This was the first military history book I ever read, it was written well and so interesting I have read a few others. It is a must read book.Better than the movie! (2008-01-07)
I admit I am a war movie buff. I bought the book after watching the movie version several times. I knew the book should be more detailed and it is! Great read.Incredible War Epic (2008-01-01)
This book is extremely well written. I’m not a soldier, but I could easily follow the battle sequences, in fact, they had me riveted to my seat. I couldn’t put the book down.
There are numerous detailed reviews, so I won’t get into the minutae of the book. I’ll only say that this book gave me a true appreciation for what our Soldiers and Marines went through during the ground war in Vietnam. Many of the battles are written in such gut wrenching detail I felt like I was in the trench with the soldiers.
I highly recommend this book.

An important read. (2008-04-01)
An important read for all Americans. Well written, with an immense amount of details about, who, what, when and where the money goes. Obviousely a great deal of research went into this book, but it is written in such a way that you don’t get bogged down in the details, they become a fluid part of a well told story. Open almost any page, and the documented, outragous spending and corruption, will stare you in the face.
Nick Turse has put together a well documented account of the DoD, tax payer funded, feeding trough, that should alarm every American. At times he shows a flair for the humorous, ( the choices are, laugh or cry )but there is nothing at all funny about this book.
A must read for all elected officials, ( and the press )who are not already well entrenched in the fleecing of America.Even Eisenhower Didn’t See This Coming (2008-03-31)
This is a fast paced compelling read. Packed with startling revelations that will horrify some, while wowing others. Nick Turse opens our eyes, as to how pervasive the Military Industrial Complex has become in our lives. He lifts the curtain on billions of dollars of Pentagon waste that Americans tolerate without question. He details for the reader the extent of how the military has garrisoned the globe.
Sounding a warning to teens that “Uncle Sam Wants You” and will do almost anything toward that end, makes this mandatory reading for young men and women as well as their parents.
Sci-fi, buffs might find cool the idea of militarized moths, or spying spiders, but the programs Dr.Turse sheds light on, are cause for grave concern.
Throughout the book the author’s clever wit is apparent and the level of research admirable. If you think the Military Industrial Complex is all guns, planes, missiles and tanks you should read The Complex. If you think that we as citizens are in control of the military you must read The Complex.
sobering, worrisome, thoughtful and scary (2008-03-27)
This book begins with a short catalogue of the various products in your cupboard that are made by companies with huge Department of Defense contracts and continues by identifying the Navy technicians who helped design your child’s computer games. In between, Nick Turse, an elegant writer, and clearly a fearsome researcher, details the ways the military has insinuated itself into all of our everyday lives — from the products we buy, the toys our children play with to the institutions that we depend upon. It is a story that begins with President Eisenhower’s famous parting words about the dangers posed by the military-industrial complex and continues through the Iraq debacle that we’re now living through. This is an important book.Another product of paranoia (2008-03-25)
I noticed this book on a stand for current events books at a local bookstore, and thought I’d give it a slam. Once again, an academic “intellectual” has a macro-theory that explains all current events. No doubt this book follows the three basic tenets of a conspiracy theory (like the book “None Dare Call It Conspiracy”): (1) Nothing is at it seems, (2) Nothing happens by accident, and (3) Everything is connected. (It’s appropriately categorized by Amazon in the proper subjects.) Of course, conspiracy theories about the “military industrial complex” go back to the 1960s. Only this one ties in the media, entertainment, academia, and all technology developments.
If the Matrix is around the corner, can the Borg Collective be far behind? (ha, ha) This book is not to be taken seriously.
I noticed that no newspapers have reviewed the book, but they’re probably part of the conspiracy, aren’t they?
P.S. The fourth tenet of a conspiracy theory is that if you question the conspiracy, you’re probably part of it.

A good companion to “The Intelligent Investor” (2007-12-25)
This book was written by two (now wildly successful) fund managers. The prose and style is clearly mid-70s, but the advice is still sound.
In particular, I liked the contrarian recommendation to buy companies w/ LOW margins. That accompanied with mean reversion of sectors gives you plenty of bang for your buck.
The differentiation of economic and accounting earnings - I have yet to see this descirbed anywhere else. I also have yet to see a sell-side analyst understand this concept.
There are also many good real world examples that we find occuring again and again and again and again….this alone makes it worth the read.
That being said, getting through this was a slog. It felt too much like a dry text book. Maybe I am a victim of flashier editing that is in vouge these days….The Financial-Integrity Approach (Safe & Cheap) (2007-06-06)
After reading this book years ago, I was interested in reading it again for the new release version. Though it is not really an updated main text version, it does have a new forward by Eugene Isenberg (current Chairman of Nabors Industries) and new introduction by the original authors of Martin Whitman and Martin Shubik. Irrespective, it was still an enlightening experience to go over the material again. Since the original printed edition, I believe Mr. Whitman’s record speaks for itself, that the “safe and cheap” methods espoused in The Aggressive Conservative Investor are good foundations to a good investment education for what the authors call “the outside passive investor”.
However, as some other reviewers have pointed out, this book is not your average investor book structured for easy reading with quick formulas. The book is for the more serious investor as its authors clearly state, for example, “In presenting our position, considerable space is devoted to describing the real world faced by both outsiders and insiders”. Their point is that in understanding the viewpoints of both the insider whether corporate management, the banker and/or financier, the directors, the short-term trader, and the outside passive investor, will help you along your way in understanding what may be happening in the market and why because of the interested parties perspective.
Though the book is a little more rough sailing because of this background perspective, to assist, one (after reading the introduction) may want to start in Section 5
As for the safe and cheap method, considerable time is spent with emphasis on the importance of the financial position of the security under consideration. This Financial-Integrity approach is detailed and viewed from all the players perspectives in the transaction of a security purchase (or seller) to emphasize the concept of the “guaranty”. In addition, even though the authors do state their differences with the Graham & Dodd methods, I feel in the end they are more connected at the hip than their stated differences may imply or indicate.
All in, if you are willing to spend the time and do the work, whether reading annuals, 10-Ks, 10-Qs, then reading this book will assist you in becoming a better investor in your investing activities, but the trip is not recommend for the casual weekend reader.Value investing produces excellent results (2007-02-10)
but today with all the new tools available to the investor there is a superior method of selecting value stocks. The method is simply use an index that is specifically built to capture the value premium. Then using this index find an Exchange Traded Fund that tracks the Index.
Enough said here is a suggestion.I recommend a little book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 different stocks for $1000 - Pay no Commission This book is a must for those wanting to find out about indexing (passive investing) and why it is the superior method for the small investor (and big one too). This book is an outstanding guide to personal investing. It will be useful to all investors from novices to highly the highly experienced. This book prepares the reader to approach investing from the standpoint of the underlying science. It is the antithesis of a ‘get rich quick scheme’.
All aspects of Modern Portfolio Theory and passive (index) investing are explained in a through and easily understood manner. The aspect I like most is that as well as a solid theoretical foundation the book is very practical and shows the reader how to create (and more importantly) and manage over time a successful portfolio. This is a great book- for the beginning investor, it’s a great place to start and for the experienced investor there are many valuable suggestions. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission

The most extraordinary part of The Aggressive Conservative Investor is that it tells the reader how minority investors can benefit by knowing and understanding how control investors make investment decisions.
If one is smart enough to realize how insiders and control investors made fortunes by taking advantage of the market cycles to do the arbitrage between private and public market, one will come to appreciate the beauty of the safe-and-cheap approach as detailed in this book.
I have come across a few negative comments on the book regarding the use of “out-dated” materials. This certainly does not take me by a surprise, as not everybody has 50 years of investment experience as Whitman does, so, naturally, not everybody can understand what “there is no new thing under the sun” means.waste of time!!!!! This book is a total waste of time and effort!!!! It is poorly written and very vague. Also, its information is too old!!!

i bought this book for my husband and he loves it. instead of reading like an itty bitty comic strip he has a whole book to himself and all the strips flow much like a story. these characters should be in a cartoon series!there’s treasure everywhere by buu (2007-05-13)
