No good deed shall go unpunished (2000-08-29)
What started out as a worthy effort by a small press to collect hard-to-find stories by one of the great American writers of this century results in bitter lawsuits, huge costs, a lesser book, and an unfortunate lesson in the realities of publishing today. Hooray for those intrepid souls like the Millers who toil in literary vineyards for the love of the art more than financial gain.Fascinating behind the scenes publishing legal battle (1998-12-11)
In 1987 an agent for Academy Chicago Publishers suggested it publish the Uncollected Stories of John Cheever. When his widow signed the agreement, it looked like a coup for this small publisher. But when the number of stories greatly exceeded what Mrs. Cheever expected, she and her children tried to call off the deal. A legal battle quickly began in Chicago and New York courts. Anita Miller does a superb job of recounting the behind the scenes legal wrangling and disastrous courtroom scenes, at the same time providing many insights into the publishing industry. A must read for fans of lawsuit accounts like Civil Action, and for those interested in publishing and publishing law.

The perfect format and forum for instruction for the novice dancer (2008-03-04)
The Tango was a slightly salacious dance that had its origins in the barrios of Argentina and went on to achieve widespread popularity in the dance halls of Europe and America in the early decades of the 20th Century — a popularity in ball room dancing that persists to this day. Profusely illustrated and with an accompanying DVD, “Gotta Tango: Argentine Tango Anywhere, Anytime” is the collaborative work of Tango experts and instructors Albert Paz and Valorie Hart. Offering (quite literally) a step-by-step instruction guide, “Gotta Tango” is the ideal do-it-yourself manual for men and women wanting to master and then excel in their performance of this Latin American dancing tradition. All of the concepts, techniques, flourishes and flairs associated with the Tango are covered in depth and in detail. This book/DVD combination is the perfect format and forum for instruction for the novice dancer (as well as a perfect brush up resource for even experienced Tango dancers coming back to the dance after an absence) and is enthusiastically recommended for personal, dance school, and community library instructional reference collections.
Teacher and Student Alert! (2008-02-08)
This innovative combination of text and DVD provides a unique resource for tango dancers at any level and for instructors as well. We have recommended it to our own students and have found it an appreciated gift to other teachers.
The well-organized information carries the reader/viewer from the most fundamental aspects of the dance into the realm of complex techniques and improvisation, while providing a thorough understanding of concepts and dynamics behind the techniques along the way.
After a first reading, don’t put it away. Both the book and the video will be valuable, long-term references.
Lessons from World-Class Masters (2008-01-03)
From the opening description of an eager and silent arrival at a nameless milonga, through the loving details of historical and musical significance, and with a thorough and conscientious discussion of the mechanics of the dance, Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart present a beautiful and invaluable resource for lovers, and future lovers, of Argentine Tango.
Theirs is a methodical approach, gleaned from a tireless dedication to understanding and teaching the structure of this dance, and they hold the keys to unlock for their readers the passion and wonder that so many tangueros worldwide have been fortunate enough to find.
Their detailed and descriptive text is accompanied by diagrams, photographs, and an accompanying DVD, all of which contribute to their enlightening discussion of the mechanics of Argentine Tango. It is well-ordered, logical, and thorough. I found their discourse on the musical history of tango to be especially fascinating, as well. It left me wanting more–and I hope that they do plan to give us more.
Paz and Hart’s text is voiced richly and fully by the historian, by the musical theorist, by the accomplished dancer, by the compassionate and skilled teacher, and ever by the dedicated lover of tango. We are exceedingly fortunate to have this timeless resource by master teachers Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart.
I agree with a previous reviewer that it should be “required reading” for any student and lover of Argentine Tango!Learning from the Masters (2007-12-28)
GOTTA TANGO (Book and DVD)
There are several excellent reviews that have already been written describing the contents of “Gotta Tango”, and its long term importance as a tango resource.
What I want you to understand is something of its revolutionary significance and value as a teaching tool. Everyone knows the old adage `those who can, do, and those who can’t teach.’ In the case of Paz and Hart, it should read `those who can do, should do, and leave the teaching to someone who really knows how to teach!’ They are among the few who not only understand and can effectively communicate the structure of the dance…their brilliance as teachers has allowed them to present the material in a variety of creative ways, so that it is accessible to students with varying learning styles.
There is first the written text, expressing an overview of the concepts being presented. Then there are step by step directions on how to properly execute the particular movements. There are diagrams (cleverly drawn from above) so one can grasp the pattern and flow of the movements, and there are photographs, allowing one to see the authors executing the steps. Each section of material also references the accompanying DVD, where one can see the movements in motion. The DVD has voice over as well as printed text-over so one can reinforce the visual concepts that way as well.
In short, if you read this book, you are going to dance better. If you don’t yet dance, you are going to want to dance, joining the tangueros and tangueras of past and future times, sharing Valorie and Alberto’s love and passion for the tango.
The definitive introductory text and DVD for modern Argentine Tango (2007-11-24)
Gotta Tango (Book & DVD)
Compact, informative and fun, this integrated digital and print textbook should be “required reading” for all students of Argentine Tango. It is not another coffee-table Tango book. Myth-busters Paz and Hart concentrate the founding history, culture and traditions of the Tango in the initial chapters. They follow this with clear and concise explanations of all the core movements; the text integrates seamlessly with the DVD chapters. All material is representative of the essential elements of Tango covered in some of the most expensive and exclusive classes around the world. Unlike many other “master” teachers, this American-Argentine duo clarifies every term and movement with precision and elegance. Both novice and expert have much to learn from “Gotta Tango”.

Hard to find (2008-01-22)
My mom had been searching all over for this book, and when I found it on Amazon, I had to buy it for her. She really enjoyed this book by Bertrice Small, and has read all of her books now.Beloved (2007-11-08)
This book takes you to different a different location and an earlier time which was different. I have read all of Bertice Small’s historical romances and I have always been suprised with her story lines. The Popcorn Historical (2003-09-09)
This novel delivers a kernel of historical interest–concentrated information in a fictional shell. But the history is depicted with such zest and verve that I had to know more. I had to go study this queen Zenobia, her city Palmyra, and the events surrounding the reign of the Emperor Aurelian. This is why I call it a popcorn historical–it inspired me to go expand my knowledge. This, I believe, should be an aim of every historical novel, and it is achieved and then some here.Substance, not drivel, in this romance (2003-03-02)
From the moment of her birth, the stars and signs foretold that Zenobia, descendant of Cleopatra, would be blessed in love and in war.
“Beloved” takes place during the Roman invasions of Palmyra (in the Syrian region of the world). I don’t know enough about history to know if this is accurate, but the story was good enough to keep me interested throughout. There are some tactical details which, surprisingly, tie in beautifully with the story of Zenobia’s loves. Unlike many books of the romance genre, Zenobia’s character is admirable not only for her beauty but for her intelligence. Sex notwithstanding, I would let an older teenager read this book.
“Beloved” surprised me because it was so well-written that it does not fall into a “fluff” category. This was a wonderful gift that was a good investment because I will read it again. I will seek out other books by Beatrice Small because I enjoyed this book so much.Good, but not Great (2002-11-03)
Maybe it’s just me, but I can only take so much drama before my eyes roll up inside my head, my brain explodes and I start rooting for the bad guys: “For the love of god, would someone just kill her already?”
This book was kind of like that.
Zenobia, god bless her, is a wonderful main character. She’s smart, beautiful, witty. In fact, she’s everything except lucky. First, her mother is raped and murdered. Then her husband is murdered. Her lover (Marcus) weds another woman, and Caesar her hated enemy, captures her and makes her his mistress.
But wait! It gets worse.
Her oldest son is a wimp. Her youngest son’s a fool. Her friends are beheaded. Her city and everyone in it is destroyed. And while she goes a little crazy, she is still forced to bed the enemy because her daughter will be murdered if she doesn’t. I think it was around the time Zenobia was forced to have sex in front of spectators I threw ‘Beloved’ out the window and haven’t picked it up since. Oops.
My recommendation? IF you dig drama and angst… you’ll love this book. If you don’t? Read something else. And if you are bi-polar, OCD, or are presently taking medication for depression? AVOID AVOID AVOID. *wink*

A worthy addition! (2008-04-18)
This book is another in the Osprey series on infantry tactics.
Like the previous books this takes a close up look and the ‘how’ and ‘with what’ of an infantry assault in WWII in general terms and then delves into national variances. The book is well illustrated and the photos are well integrated with the work. Anyone with limited experience of reading military history can easily become more enlightened on how what they are reading about was done after reading this book.
This book fills in the details of what many of us (thankfully) only read about. Taken with the other Osprey works on similar topics will give the reader a much clearer view on how the history was accomplished.
An excellent resource for wargamers or history buffs! (2008-03-21)
The good blokes at Osprey Publishing in merry ole’ England have been quite prolific in recent days with new volumes within their already impressive line-up of books of interest to military history buffs and wargamers. Among the recent new releases is Volume #160 of their Elite series. Entitled World War II Infantry Assault Tactics, this 64-page softback book is a very worthy addition. While so many books focus on the equipment, organization, uniforms, and battles, this one is a departure, focusing on ground assault tactics on a micro-level. The author, Gordon L. Rottman, is a former infantryman well versed in the art of small arms combat, and his experience and research, coupled with his strong prose, enable the reader to get a good grasp of small unit tactics during the Second World War.
In particular, Rottman studies and explains the techniques used to eliminate the enemy’s fortified positions. He discusses the detailed planned and preparation that the infantry and / or engineering teams go through before the actual attack, as well as the typical defensive preparations such as minefields, obstacles, and fortifications. Rottman examines the differences in assault tactics between the major combatants - U.S., Germany, Great Britain, and Japan — comparing and contrasting the styles (and results).
Profusely illustrated by Peter Dennis, in Osprey’s common style of excellence, this new book is a very interesting read, and, for those of us who have never been involved in a military attack on a fortified position, it gives a reasonable overview of what goes into the attack — far more that what Saving Private Ryan or the old John Wayne WWII films might imply. Pick up a copy today if you are interested in the details behind the scenes.

At your Service Part 1 (2008-03-18)
Sachie Wakamura’s mother has just past away. She has no one to turn to until her estranged grandfather shows up and tells her that she is going to live with him. Here’s the thing though, her grandfather happens to head the Yakuza, the most vile crime syndicate in Japan. While dealing with her grief over her mother Sachie begins to learn why she left the household to begin with. There are many surprises in store for Sachie, including her grandfather’s choice in a bodyguard for his beloved granddaughter.
Rakuto, the young man in question, soon begins to tail Sachie everywhere she goes, including school. Rakuto’s handsome looks and gentle demeanor make him a favourite at school and Sachie resigns on having him be her bodyguard, but she can’t settle her heart whenever she looks at him. Will falling in love with the bosses blood prove such a good idea for Rakuto?
This is a great start. I really enjoyed it. The art is gorgeous! I was really pleased with it. And the story seems like it’s going to be a lot of fun. I will grab it off the shelf as soon as I can.
How I liked it. (2007-12-26)
It was so funny even though it has yakuza in it. It only makes it funnier.><Willing to give it a second chance… (2007-12-06)
Wild Ones stats with 15 year old Sachie Wakamura wondering where she will go now that her mother is dead, when her grandfather (whom she believed deceased) appears and invites her to live with him. The catch? He is a yakuza boss, who assigns her a bodyguard named Rakuto Igarashi (who happens to be the most popular guy in school). As the story develops, there isn’t much of a plot, just different stories in which you get to know the characters a little better (insight into their past lives, Sachie’s acclimatation to the yakuza environment, etc ). The inevitable, of course, ensues, and Sachie starts to fall for Rakuto, but Rakuto believes she is above him (and as a matter of fact addresses her as Sachie-sama/ Princess at all times) because she is the boss’s grand-daughter (and she does show her tough steak once in a while) and therefore he cannot return the feeling (though it’s pretty obvious that he does care for her).
The art is not the greatest, but the panels are well placed and the story flows very well (you won’t have to re-read a page because you don’t know what goes next in the script, it’s not very crouded). I would definetely buy the second volume to see where the story is going and whether the author attemped to do a more structured story line. You probably won’t LOL, but you will smile with the heroine’s antics…hope this was useful, happy reading ^0^
